Of all the exterior and interior made components of our environment a stairway can become a wonderful experience. The stairway celebrates the human being by reflecting our proportions within its proportions. The stairway measures from the height of the rail, measuring our arm, and the size of a step, measuring our foot. Also the act of ascending and descending always leaves us to consider a connection of the worlds, from memorials and temples to parliaments and palaces. A well designed stairway can hold a thrill similar to the Spanish Steps in Rome or the double helix stairway at Chambord castle in the Loire valley. It is a world of its own.
