This house champions the delight of architectural space. The two principal stories
connect with a stairway on one side and an atrium on the other, rising to a tent-like ceiling. The
master suite faces directly onto large northern windows designed in the shape of a prow. The
resulting atrium is a parallelogram. Light pours into the house casting soft shadows. At night, the
interior reveals itself to the street.
Materials for the floors are oak and bamboo for warmth. Panels and built in components of the house
are sprayed lacquer painted in place. Color and form support theoretical and metaphorical intent.
The client says she loves the house on a daily
basis.
